BRICK
At least weâre together, I think as I look around the laundry room in the unfinished basement. Itâs basically a fucking storage closet, with no windows. The walls are exposed stone, part of the original foundation. Iâm not punching my way out of here.
Satisfied that weâre safe for now at least, I turn my attention to Bea. Sheâs standing in the middle of the cramped space, staring up at a solitary lightbulb thatâs swinging from a wire.
âItâs dead,â she says, a shiver in her voice like sheâs trying to control herself. She reaches up and pulls at the string that operates the switch. Just a click and nothing else. âThey must have left it on when they went on vacation. Idiots. How do you not turn off the lights before you leave the house?!â
I take a breath as I watch her reach up above her head again. That gray skirt is riding up her solid thighs, and I almost groan out loud when I see her perfectly formed ass and legs flex and tighten as she goes up on her toes and tries to reach for the bulb. Finally I step up and reach above her head for her, twisting the bulb in case it was just loose. Nope. Itâs dead.
âThereâs enough light,â I say softly, glancing at the frosted glass window above the locked door. Light from the rest of the basement is casting a dim glow over the laundry room. Thereâs also some sunlight somehow making its way in from the stairway and passage. âWeâll be fine, Bea. Those guys arenât going to mess with us. Itâll be over in a few hours.â
âIn a few hours the sun will be gone and itâll be dark,â Bea says. âAnd what if the lights in the basement go out?â
I frown again as I look at the fear on her pretty face. âWait,â I say slowly, rubbing my chin. âAre you . . . are you afraid of the dark?â
She turns to me, her red lips pursed tight, her fists clenched like sheâs about to lose her shit. âYes!â she says, her voice peaked. âYes, OK? Laugh all you want, but I canât help it! I had a bad experience as a kid, and I . . . you know what, never mind. We need to get out of her, Brick! I canât be in here! Break this door down! Do something!â
âNo,â I say, shaking my head and taking another step toward her. âI canât risk a fight. Thereâs too many people in this house. No way Iâm fighting my way out without someone getting hurt. And I canât risk that. I wonât risk that. I may be dumb, but Iâm not that dumb.â
Bea blinks at my last sentence, calming down almost instantly as her focus turns to me. Her face softens as she looks up at me. âYouâve said that a couple of timesâthat youâre dumb. But youâre not. I saw how you dealt with those men up there, Brick.
